Meiji Shrine is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and is wife (Empress Shōken). After the Emperor and Empress passed away, people wanted to commemorate their virtues and honor them forever so they donated one hundred thousand trees from all over Japan and overseas and voluntarily worked to make the forest that surrounds the shrine buildings. Buildings consist of the main building Honden (inner most Sanctuary), Naihaiden (inner hall), Gehaiden (outer hall), Shinko (treasure house), Shinsenjo (kitchen for food offerings), and smaller buildings.
